Food ingredients and renewable energy firm Darling Ingredients said Monday that its purchase of independent rendering firm Valley Proteins Inc. has closed. The $1.1 billion transaction includes 18 rendering plants and used cooking oil facilities across the US.
“We are excited to welcome Valley Proteins to the Darling Ingredients family,” Randall C. Stuewe, chairman and chief executive officer of Darling, said in a company release. “Valley Proteins has built a successful rendering and used cooking oil business that immediately strengthens our base business and expands our ability to provide additional low carbon intensity feedstocks to fuel growing demand for renewable diesel.”
Plans for the deal were first announced in December. The purchase price is subject to various closing adjustments.
Valley Protein offers waste collection services to the foodservice, meat processing, and supermarket industries, and processes the material into fats and proteins used as animal feed ingredients. The company also converts used cooking oil from restaurants and animal fats into renewable biofuel ingredients.
